Why Winter Preparation Matters
Winter doesn’t have to mean the end of your caravanning adventures, but it does mean preparing your caravan properly. Whether you’re storing your caravan for the colder months or planning a few crisp winter getaways, taking time to prepare now can save you money, prevent damage and ensure everything is ready when spring arrives.
Cold temperatures, damp conditions and frost can all cause problems if a caravan is left unprotected. Water systems can freeze, seals may deteriorate and batteries can lose charge. Winter preparation helps protect your investment, maintain your caravan’s value and avoid unpleasant surprises later on.
Draining the Water System
One of the most important steps is draining down the water system. All fresh and waste water tanks should be emptied, taps opened and the boiler and toilet flush system fully drained. Leaving taps open helps prevent any remaining water from freezing and expanding in the pipes.

Preventing Damp and Condensation
Damp prevention is another key area to focus on during winter storage. Moisture absorbers placed around the caravan can help reduce condensation, while leaving internal doors, wardrobes and cupboards slightly open allows air to circulate. Ensuring vents are clear and giving the interior a thorough clean before storage also makes a big difference.
Exterior Checks and Protection
The exterior of the caravan should be carefully checked before winter sets in. Inspect window and door seals for cracks or signs of wear, check rooflights and vents, and clean the bodywork to remove dirt and road salt. Applying a protective polish can provide an extra layer of protection against the elements.

Battery, Tyres and Security
Batteries often suffer in cold weather, so it’s worth taking extra care. If possible, remove the leisure battery and store it somewhere cool and dry, keeping it charged over the winter months. If the battery remains in the caravan , it should be disconnected to avoid unnecessary drain.
Tyres should be inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure and checked regularly. Moving the caravan occasionally so can help prevent flat spots, while wheel covers offer protection from frost and UV damage. Security is also important, so fitting wheel clamps and hitch locks adds peace of mind. Many owners also choose a breathable caravan cover for extra protection during long periods of storage.
