Planning to take your caravan to Europe? Recent laws changes mean UK caravan owners now need to meet new requirements before travelling abroad.

At Active Leisure, we’re already helping customers prepare for these updates – so here’s everything you need to know to stay legal, avoid fines, and travel with confidence.

What Is the New Caravan Law?

As of 26 August 2025, UK caravans and trailers over 750kg must now be registered before travelling to most European countries.

This is a major change, as previously most leisure caravans didn’t require individual registration for travel abroad.

In simple terms: If you’re taking your caravan to Europe, you now must register it first.

Does This Apply to Your Caravan?

This rule applies to:

  • Most touring caravans (as they typically exceed 750kg)
  • Personal and leisure use – not just commercial trailers
  • Travel to most European countries, including France, Germany, and Italy.

You don’t need to register if you’re only travelling to:

  • Ireland
  • Spain
  • Cyprus
  • Malta

However, if your drive through another country (e.g. France to reach Spain), registration is still required.

What you Need to Do Before Travelling

To comply with the new law, you must:

  • Register your caravan with the DVLA
  • Fit a separate trailer registration plate
  • Carry a registration certificate when travelling
  •  Display a UK sticker on the rear of the caravan
  • Carry specific equipment like hazard warning triangles, fire extinguishers (or, in France, special blind-spot stickers for large vehicles)

The process is straightforward, but it’s essential to get it right before your trip.

Other Important Travel Requirements

Alongside the new registration rules, make sure you also have:

  • Valid insurance that covers European travel
  • Driving licence
  • Vehicle documents (V5C, MOT if applicable)

You may also face longer border checks due to EU entry systems being introduced.

Don’t Risk Fines or Travel Delays

These new regulations are already being enforced across Europe, and travelling without the correct registration could lead to:

  • On-the-spot fines
  • Delays at borders
  • Being turned away from your destination

A simple check before you travel can save a lot of stress.
